Fuel-saving secrets: myths and reality

Fuel prices in Poland and across Europe keep rising. Filling the tank is an ever bigger strain on the household budget. No wonder many drivers look for ways to save fuel. But not everything you find online actually works. The SerwisUA team from Wrocław explains which tips make sense and which are only popular myths.

❌ Myth 1: The higher the gear, the lower the consumption

This is only partly true. Driving in a higher gear at a moderate speed (for example 70–90 km/h) really can cut fuel use. But:

  • Engine revs that are too low overload the engine, which causes wear and… higher consumption.
  • In town, with frequent stops, forcing a high gear can do harm.

Reality: change gear to match driving conditions and keep revs in the 1,500–2,500 rpm range.

❌ Myth 2: Fuel additives always help you save

Fuel additives are often advertised as miracle products for lower consumption or system cleaning. In practice:

  • In most cases they have no real effect on fuel use.
  • Sometimes they can damage the fuel system or the catalytic converter.

Reality: instead of experiments, use branded filling stations and service the car regularly.

✅ Fact: The vehicle’s technical condition is the basis of saving

The most reliable way to use less fuel is a car in good working order:

  • Worn spark plugs, a dirty air filter or a lambda probe can raise consumption by as much as 20%.
  • A clogged fuel filter or a damaged pump also affect how much fuel is used.
  • Tyre pressure that is too low = more rolling resistance and higher consumption.

At SerwisUA in Wrocław we carry out comprehensive diagnostics of the fuel system, ignition and engine so the car burns fuel efficiently and runs reliably.

✅ Fact: Driving style matters a great deal

How you drive affects consumption more than most drivers think:

  • Sudden acceleration and braking are the main enemies of economy.
  • Smooth driving, reading the traffic and using gears properly can cut consumption by as much as 25%.
  • In modern cars, coasting in neutral uses no fuel at all.

Tip from SerwisUA: avoid long idling — modern engines do not need a long warm-up, especially in summer.

❌ Myth 3: The fewer things in the boot, the bigger the savings

Extra mass does affect fuel use, but only with a significant load (100 kg and more). Removing a first-aid kit or a jack makes no difference.

A roof box, however, or open windows at high speed can increase air resistance and consumption by as much as 10%.

❌ Myth 4: Air conditioning always increases consumption

Air conditioning draws engine power, but:

  • At speeds above 80 km/h open windows create more air resistance than running the air conditioning.
  • In town the difference is small, and comfort and concentration behind the wheel matter more than a few groszy saved on fuel.

Note: regular air-conditioning maintenance (for example cabin-filter replacement, checking refrigerant level) helps lower the load on the engine and indirectly reduces consumption.
