Advice from SerwisUA
Winter mornings often bring drivers unpleasant surprises: frozen windows, difficulty starting the engine or a frozen car lock. What should you do in that situation? How can you avoid damaging the lock and get into the vehicle quickly? The SerwisUA team has prepared practical advice on dealing with frozen locks and how to prevent such problems.
Why does a car lock freeze?
Car locks can freeze because moisture gets into the mechanism. Here are a few main causes:
- Rain or snow: water gets inside the lock and freezes when the temperature drops.
- Condensation: sudden temperature changes can cause moisture to settle inside the lock mechanism, which then freezes.
- Lack of lubrication: when a lock is not maintained for a long time, the risk of it freezing increases.
What to do when a car lock freezes?
Here are a few simple, safe ways to thaw the lock:
1. Use a lock de-icer
This is the fastest and safest method. Automotive shops sell special preparations for thawing locks. Just put a few drops into the mechanism and wait a few seconds until the lock unlocks.
2. Heat the key
If you do not have de-icer to hand, you can use a heated key.
- Carefully heat the key with a lighter or matches.
- Insert the heated key into the lock and gently try to turn it.
⚠️ Warning: do not overheat the key, so as not to damage plastic parts.
3. Use warm air
Use a hairdryer or a car heater to direct warm air onto the lock.
- Hold the hairdryer 10–15 cm from the lock to avoid overheating the metal.
- This method is safe, though it may take a little more time.
4. Apply isopropyl alcohol
Alcohol effectively dissolves ice.
- Put a few drops of alcohol on the key or directly into the lock.
- Repeat until the mechanism unlocks.
5. Warm water — only as a last resort
If you have no other options, you can use warm (not hot!) water.
- Slowly pour warm water over the lock while gently turning the key. ⚠️ Warning: this method can lead to refreezing if the lock is not dried immediately.
What should you NOT do?
- Do not use force. Yanking the key hard can break it or damage the lock mechanism.
- Do not use boiling water. Hot water can damage the car’s paint and deform metal parts.
- Avoid aggressive chemicals. They can destroy delicate internal lock parts.
How to prevent a car lock from freezing?
To avoid problems with frozen locks, it is worth following a few rules:
- Use lock lubricant Lubricate locks regularly with a special silicone- or graphite-based preparation. It creates a protective layer and reduces the risk of moisture getting in.
- Use central locking If your car has central locking, use the remote to minimise contact with the mechanical lock.
- Avoid washing the car before frost If you wash the car in winter, make sure the locks are completely dry. Remaining moisture can freeze.
- Always carry de-icer Keep a small container of de-icer in your pocket or bag. It is a fast, practical solution in emergencies.
